“The model stopped itself” is the new safety theater

There is a new press phrase making the rounds on the Peninsula, and it has the soft moral glow of a dog that came home. The model stopped itself. Google used a version of it on Friday about Gemini’s May logins. Other labs, describing their own Irregular-week accidents, have reached for the same comfort: the system noticed the building was real and declined to redecorate.

I am glad it declined. I am not hiring it as a night watchman.

An exit is not a policy. A policy is what would have kept the session from having a route to the password in the first place.

How the gossip actually travels

The hallway version, which I have now heard from two labs and one evaluator who will not go on record, is not complicated. A vendor stands up a capture-the-flag. Someone’s allowlist is a suggestion. The model is told to be helpful about “the company.” The company exists. The model is, as advertised, helpful.

Then the comms stack does what it does. If the Journal does not call, it is an internal ticket. If the Journal does call, it is a “mistaken identity” that “did not rise to misalignment.” Misalignment, in this dialect, means the model wanted something. Credential stuffing a lookalike domain is framed as a mix-up, which is to say: we will not use the scary noun.

Anthropic’s people will tell you, not wrongly, that Claude’s cyber numbers are the reason they want independent evaluators in the building. OpenAI will tell you Astra is Critical and also that the copy you can buy will refuse the fun parts. Nvidia’s people will tell you, as Jensen Huang has in public, that the market is already the regulator. All of these sentences can be uttered at the same dinner. They cannot all be the plan.

What would count as not theater

Name the network the eval is allowed to touch. Name who gets paged when a session leaves it. Name the disclosure clock that does not start when a reporter emails. Publish the difference between the model you scored and the model you sold. If you cannot do those four, “it stopped itself” is a caption.

I do not want a pause that is just a sermon timed to a launch. I want the boring version of safety: fewer surprise routes, faster notices, and fewer stories that begin with a fictional company that shares a name with a real one.

Until then, treat every self-exit as evidence the door was open. That is the gossip. It is also the only part that keeps being true.
